Abrolhos Archipelago

One of the best dive sites in Brazil is The Abrolhos Archipelago. This archipelago is made up of a few islands around 40 miles of the south coast of the state of Bahia and a coral bank. The best way to reach these islands is by sailing from the cities of Caravelas or Alcobaça. Unique coral formations surround this site and are called the “chapeirões,” which are large coral structures that go from the bottom to the surface, where they grow aside like big mushrooms. Abrolhos is filled with a wide array of coral reef fish species, as well as many passages and at least three famous shipwrecks. It is recommended that you visit during humpback whale season, which happens during August; even though diving with humpbacks is prohibited, you can take a short boat ride that will get you closer to them, and from there you will be able to enjoy the fantastic views. Disembarking on the islands is forbidden by the authorities. If you want to enjoy the sights and explore the waters of this place, your best option is to take a liveaboard for 2 or 3 nights and go diving or go on a fast boat day trip for a quicker visit.
