Some of the oldest human fossils in the world have been found in South Africa and is known as the “Cradle of Humankind”. Today, it is home to the second largest economy in Africa (only behind Nigeria) and the 33rd largest economy in the world. The Republic of South Africa is a country located, as its name suggests, at the southernmost tip of the African continent. It is the largest country on the continent both in size and population with a total area of 1,221,037 square kilometers (471,445 square miles) and a population of over 57 million people. The most important number for diver though is that the country features 2,798 kilometers (1,739 miles) of coastline which borders the South Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Indian Ocean to the east, creating a dazzling variety of dive sites to explore.
