Diving in Tohoku

Plankton abounds where the cold and warm currents collide in the waters off Tohoku, making it one of the best fishing grounds in Japan. Aquaculture is also active, and you can dive on shelves where ascidians are cultivated. Akiu Otaki Falls in Miyagi Prefecture, Onagawa, and Sado Island are great dives in Honshu. Shark diving in Tobishima is a must where they gather by the dozens to spawn in the spring. Although it is not a tropical area, diving in Tohoku is full of colorful kelp and sponges with unique orange sea squirts.
