DAN Supports Hyperbaric Chamber On Nosy Be
August 17, 2015
In July 2015, Madagascar's first hyperbaric chamber became fully operational on the small island of Nosy Be, in the "Viet et Harmonie" health centre.
This is good news for divers, as they would be able to receive the necessary treatment on-site in the event of a diving accident. The team administering the treatments have been trained by DAN Europe and DAN Southern Africa on the proper management and operations of the hyperbaric chamber. The official opening ceremony was held at the health centre itself; it was attended by both the staff and DAN personnel. and involved much jubilation for everyone present.
Diving in Madagascar
As the fourth largest island in the world, Madagascar has over 4,800 kilometres of coastline. Located in the Indian Ocean off the eastern coast of South Africa, it is surrounded by a large coral reef. The waters around the island are home to numerous marine species, including fish, whales, dolphins, turtles and several shark species. From May to October, whale sharks and manta rays can also be found here.
The water temperatures range from 24 to 30 degrees Celsius. The best time of the year to dive is from May to December. Madagascar's best dive sites – including the wrecks – are within range of Nosy Be; hence, access to the new hyperbaric chamber is facilitated in the event of an accident.
