The Rip

World famous “The Rip“ Located at the southern tip of Direction Island. Due to the possible strong incoming current, usually only experienced as a snorkel dive. Occasionally with a northern swell entering the lagoon the inward flow may diminish allowing the site to be experienced on scuba.

White tip reef sharks sleeping under the ledge, many spotted sweetlips, maori wrasse, groupers, red bass.

Broccoli Patch is a great dive site for new and not yet qualified divers. Easy descent from the boat to a 5m sandy bottom. Slow ascend to 3m then drop down slowly to 9m. A perfect location for dive students working on their buoyancy skills.

Perfect first dive for our Cocos Dive Open Water Student. Sandy bottom with reef for the new diver to explore. Easy navigation, clean water, and marine life. Lots of branching corals.

Celestes

Named after Cocos Dive trainee / assistant Celeste. Lots of hard coral and a very enjoyable site for all divers. Usually less current compared to Ripper. Located on the eastern side of atoll best dived during the summer months.

Ripper

Located on the eastern side of the atoll, close to the water entry point to the world famous RIP. Can be current prone so not usually one for novice divers. If current is running we may swim away for the boat for 45 minutes, then swim up and out into the blue and then drift back to the boat for a mid water safety

Prison Gardens

Popular dive tucked in on the eastern side of the southern atoll near Prison Island. Summer moths dive site or an option for protected dive site during southerly winds.

Manta Cleaning Station

Popular snorkel site close to Direction Island. Local mantas favor this site for their regular cleaning. Two small coral outcrops at 9m home for the cleaning wrasse needed for this vital service.

Hooters

Easy dive site for new and not yet qualified divers. Descend to the 8m bottom. Explore the reef and rubble-filled bottom out towards the drop-off. Then work on those navigation skills on the return to the dive boat.

Old Cleaning Station

For many years this was a manta cleaning station. For some unknown reason, the mantas no longer use this site. It is a popular training site for new divers. Keep it in your log book however most likely to dive the new cleaning station.

Fan Wall

Popular site for all levels of divers. Lots to see on top of the reef shallower than 20m. Experienced divers can venture out into the blue to swim with the black trevally and look down at the cruising sharks and dogtooth tuna. The expert diver can slip down the wall to 40m to enjoy the fans and a cave.

Kat’s Kables

This is an anchoring site near Two Caves. Look for old communication cables connecting Direction Island to Australia and the world. Sadly it appears that Kat the dugong may have moved on to green sea grass pastures.
